BTS: Crochet Jimin doll by DAMNINCAFE (SFW)

Fandom: BTS
Characters/Pairing/Other Subject: Park Jimin
Content Notes/Warnings: N/A
Medium: Crochet
Artist on DW/LJ: N/A
Artist Website/Gallery: [twitter.com profile] DAMINCAFE
Why this piece is awesome: Any time there's a Jimin crochet doll, I pretty much feel like 🥰 cuz that's a lot of cuteness all at once. Partly cuz Jimin himself is a Cutie, Sexy, Lovely (TM) guy.

AND, there's also the fact that, in this one instance, the inspiration is a pic he himself uploaded to his IG account in which he's wearing a gray hoodie with rabbit ears. It's a v. happy-making piece, NGL.

(There's a side-by-side comparison between the knit fanwork and the OG pic, btw.)

Star Wars: trade your heart for bones to know by blackkat

Fandom: Star Wars
Pairings/Characters: Jaster Mereel/Jon Antilles
Rating: mature
Length: 126k
Creator Links: [archiveofourown.org profile] blackkat
Theme: arranged marriage, novel-length, epic works, worldbuilding, psychic powers, never met in canon, marriage of convenience, cultural differences, AU, fork in the road.

Summary: A week after an attack that nearly killed him and his son, Jaster Mereel finds Mostross dead on a battlefield. His killer is a Jedi, grievously wounded, who Jaster takes into his care. By Mandalorian tradition, Jon Antilles owes him a life-debt, and Jaster is cunning enough not to let such a thing slip away.

It's meant to be an entirely political arrangement. It doesn't stay that way for long.

Reccer's Notes: Blackkat is a very prolific author who does an excellent job of taking medium-obscure Star Wars characters and doing really interesting things with them. Jaster Mereel is Jango Fett's adoptive father, and the Mandalore. (In canon, he was killed by Montross.) Jon Antilles is a Jedi who was abused by his Master growing up, but also learned some really obscure and difficult Force tricks from her, and spends his life wandering the galaxy alone as the Force wills. You don't have to know much more than that, as blackkat weaves a really interesting story about them, fleshing them both out deeply from what canon gives us.

WIP Challenge Check-in, Day 3 -- Friday

Hello on Friday!  Looking back at the day today -- or yesterday, if today hasn't gotten going yet -- how did it go?

   - I thought about my fic once or twice
   - I wrote
   - I did some planning and/or research
   - I edited
   - I've sent my fic off to my beta
   - I posted today!
   - I'm taking a break
   - I did something else that I'll talk about in a comment

Looking forward, how are you planning to spend your weekend?

   - I'm going to make up for not writing all week by having a writing marathon
   - I'm going to keep writing at my current rate and see how it goes
   - I have other plans, but I might have time to get some writing in
   - I'm going to take a break from writing

    - None

What I'm Doing Wednesday

books
+ Weavers, Scribes, and Kings: A New History of the Ancient Near East by Amanda H. Podany. 2022. So very thorough, determined to give women equal focus, and surprisingly granular, given the subject.
+ Wolf Worm by T. Kingfisher. 2026. Horror. TW massive body horror, insects.
~ The Silk Road: A New History by Valerie Hansen. 2012. Hard to rate this. Hansen chooses only one of the several overland "silk roads" to research and does some solid scholarship about it. However, she draws general and highly questionable conclusions about ALL of the silk roads from her single study.
+ America and Iran: A History 1720 to the Present by John Ghazvinian. 2020. Outstanding! The best contextualization of the US-Iran relationship I've ever read. I only wish it included an appendix covering the last six years since publication. Highly recommended.

yarning
Got an order for a bunny, a heart, and a mushroom, which I finished today. Also got an order for a different bunny and a different mushroom, which I'll start on tonight. Got the dinosaur for nibling in the mail.

healthcrap
I successfully got my health coverage renewed for a full year, instead of the mere four months it was, initially & inexplicably, set for. Got my second shingles shot Friday. Got meds refilled & resumed the one I had totally run out of, doh. Got hit by ALL the shingles shot side effects, which is like a bad case of the flu (worse than covid). So not fun, but good to have it finished for life. Botox for migraines this coming Friday. Generally feeling somewhat better.

#resist
I hope some (many?) of you were able to march Saturday for No Kings Day 3.

Two gold rings photographed on top of a dictionary opened to the definition of marriage. Text: Arranged Marriage, at Fancake.
Our theme for April is arranged marriage!

Since this is a Flashback Round where we revisit a theme from the early days of the comm—arranged marriage was a Cupcake Round back in 2014—this month it doesn't matter if a work has already been recced for this theme, go ahead and rec it again!

The tag for this round is: theme: arranged marriage

If you're just joining us, be sure to check out our policy on content notes. Content notes aren't required, but they're nice to include in your recs, especially if a fanwork has untagged content that readers may wish to know about in advance.

WIP Challenge Check-in, Day 1 -- Wednesday

Hello on Wednesday!  How are things going in the world of fic?

Did you write?

   - Yes!
   - No!
   - Not yet!

If yes, what kind of writerly activity did you engage in?  How do you feel about it?
If no, what were the obstacles/situations that affected your writerly pursuits?  What will you do differently tomorrow to get more writing done?
If not yet, because the day hasn't gotten going yet, what kind of writing activity are you planning (or hoping) to accomplish?

April sign up

It's time to sign up for the April WIP challenge! Some people join the challenge mid month, or comment on check-in posts without signing up, which is fine -- I'm glad there's a way for the challenge to be useful in a variety of ways. For those of you who find the commitment of signing up useful, please leave a comment with the below information.

Sign-ups will be open until the end of April.

Level of challenge: 1 chapter, 1000 words, 1 fic finished, whatever you like
Fandom(s) involved: if you know at this point
What you're looking for from the challenge: this could be as vague or specific as you like: someone to be accountable to, someone to remind you to write, someone to bounce ideas off, etc.
What you could offer other participants yourself: ditto!
How people should contact you: DW message, e-mail, IM etc.
Time zone: useful for seeing who might be up for a writing session at a time convenient to you

Copypaste below:

The post for hosting the daily check-in is here and thanks to everyone who helps out with this. If you're interested in helping out and there are still slots available the post remains open until the last week of the month and we generally run our week Sunday to Saturday, I'm happy to chat via PM on DW for anyone who might need it.

If you have ever completed a fic through this challenge we have a collection on AO3 and on SquidgeWorld both collections are open and unmoderated. Should there be an issue with adding a work, let me know and I'll see if there's a fix for it.

Dark Shadows: The Wide Winged Moon by Kark

Fandom: Dark Shadows

Pairings/Characters: Magda Rakosi/Sandor Rakosi, Angelique Bouchard Collins/Barnabas Collins, Barnabas Collins/Julia Hoffman, Nicholas Blair, Aristede, Andreas Petofi, Quentin Collins

Rating: Gen

Length: 93,699 words

Creator Links: AO3 Profile

Theme: Siblings

Summary: What if Julia loses her memory? What would happen if Blair had to actually help the Collins family? The answer was obvious: He'd hate it. He'd hate it soooo hard.

Reccer's Notes: Siblings come in all flavors, and this fic explores the dynamics of a witches' coven brother and sister, Angelique and Nicholas. With Satan as "parent," how is the more familiar sibling relationship different? How is it the same? Author delves delightfully into the question, as well as the all-too-human found-sibling relationship of Quentin and Julia.

Heated Rivalry: Taken by Evilharlowe

Fandom: Heated Rivalry
Characters/Pairings: Shane Hollander/Ilya Rozanov, Alexei Rosanov, Yuna Hollander, David Hollander, Hayden Pike, Jackie Pike, Rose Landry
Rating: Teen
Length: 7394
Content Notes: no AO3 warnings apply.
Creator Links: Evilharlowe on AO3
Themes: Siblings, Action/Adventure, Competence, Established relationship + plot, canon LGBTQ+ characters

Summary: Four months after their wedding, Shane Hollander and Hayden Pike are kidnapped by disillusioned fans who see Shane's coming out and departure from the Voyageurs as the ultimate betrayal. With the police off-limits and a ten million dollar ransom on the clock, Ilya makes the last phone call he ever expected to make — to the estranged brother in Moscow he hasn't spoken to in three years. What follows is a night of unlikely alliances, hockey sticks used as weapons, and the discovery that family isn't defined by blood but by who shows up when everything falls apart.

Reccer's Notes: This is a rare Heated Rivalry story in which Alexei Rozanov isn't a complete shit. He's fairly one-dimensionally a baddie in both the books and the show, but here, while the author doesn't pretend he's a nice guy, the fic leans into him being a police officer and gives him both competence, and underlying family loyalty to Ilya when the chips are down. Another plus is that Shane is far from being a helpless victim. Gripping, and an excellent read.

ETA: unfortunately this author has now deleted their AO3 profile. More info here.
